Yeah, you can buy the second video card for your PC and crowd another monitor onto your desk. This allows you to attach the 2nd (and 3rd) monitor, that belongs to another PC, via the LAN.

two interesting tidbits

Whilest smufing the inarweb, I found two interesting articles linked from arstechnica,

the first:
"When a Video Game Stops Being Fun", apparently a few EA (as in electronic arts) employees have indeed been working like monkeys sitting at typewriters being fed on a drip 24/7. Its an interesting, albeit fairly short (2 pages) read.

the other:
"Clear Pictures of How We Think", an article about some new discoveries how the brain makes decisions using MRI research.

finally, DVDs that will last for longer than a week

Its been a long time coming, but TDK apparently is our saviour as they have created a scratch and stain resistant surface for DVDs and upcoming formats. good stuff.. and about bloody time!

heres a snippet from the article:

Researchers at electronics giant TDK have developed a tough new coating that promises to make scratched DVDs a thing of the past and that will help usher in an emerging data storage format with 10 times the capacity of the current DVD standard.

In a test conducted by CNET News.com, a DVD treated with TDK's coating survived a determined attack with a screwdriver and a Sharpie permanent marker with no effect on playability--a remarkable feat considering how easily standard DVDs can be damaged, for example, by children.

outsourcing....... grr

warning: rant ahead

outsourcing.. buisnesses love it. well i really dont care where a company gets empleyees or contracts them from..

companies are there to:
a) make money
b) provide a service

so however they choose to make this money is dictated by their investors and the like. BUT GODDAMN PROVIDE A SERVICE. recently ive spoken to dell 4 times in regards to my notebook purchase (there was an error that happened with the order. but thats all ok now) the problem is that they outsource their call centers. The *only* problem i see with this is I CANT BLOODY UNDERSTAND THE PERSON IM TALKING TO. look, i have friends from all nationalities and backgrounds (yes including indians) with varying levels of english competency, i get along with them fine, and they're great people.. but for a company to provide a service to customers where their staff can barely speak or understand english is ****ing appaling. eventually the staff and I understand each other, but i GUARENTEE you the average australian person would not have a *clue* what these people are saying, nor the patience to put up with them.

What kind of public image does this show for dell?

oh its not only large US companies that have this problem.. telstra/optus are in the same boat.. just call emup and see how much *fun* it is...

quote of the month

*runs to the toilet* *hurrrl* "close enough.."
-victor @6:30am sunday

ah twas victors birthday on friday, and we finally managed to get him drunk, erm on saturday. it was a group effort. good work all! ;)

on a side note.. still waiting for my shiny laptop/notebook whateveryacallit gizmo..

oh and almost forgot, although this will be everywhere already anyway.. firefox 1.0 was released today.. sweet.. and thunderbird 0.9 was released a couple days ago as well..

im happy to say that ive only used internet explorer three times in the past 3 months (2x for windows update, and once for the --slightly bizzare-- dell website).

my mail is a 100% sucess.. ive used thunderbird exclusively since i adopted it from version 0.7..

the waiting game

well i bit the bullet.. bought me a laptop *cough* sorry notebook as they are now called..

after some hard thinking whether to convert to an apple powerbook, i've decided to stick with windows for the time being. my reasoning was that
1. it's cheaper by FAR
2. i dont have to get used to a new os (which will kill my productivity at work, not to mention to re-learn how to use a pc and a whole new set of interface problems)
3. there is more software available for it.
4. if i get sick of windows i can nuke it and install fedora again.

i guess ill just wait untill i have enough spare cash and time to learn a new os... i will soo you then apple..

i ended up going for a dell pentium m based system which i basically cusomized to upgrade everything.. for an *incredibly* reasonable price thanks to the specials they have going this week. so for under $2500 i end up with a killer system... so now the waiting begins.. 10 days estimated time.. is such a long amount of time to wait for a new toy when you've already paid for it..work faster dell factory minions!

Nervous Wreck gig, 24th Nov.

I have been led to believe that Nervous Wreck will be playing at the Empress on the 24th November.
One of the support bands is Armchair Critics - a band we were supposed to play with at the Yak and the House of Fools.

Anyways, anyone else going to to that 24th Nov gig?

There's a band called The Five Venoms - probably named after some old kung fu movie. Saw them last night at the Old Bar.

They were incredible. Spinal Tap to the nth degree. Glam to the max! Twin guitar solos, the hair, the leather pants, the works. Plus they did a crazy-ass cover of Queen's song thingie - we will rock you...

i soo want Mac OS X

sigh.. recently i have been reading a whole lot about apple's Mac OS X.. and im left drooling..

firstly an opensource emulator PearPC v0.3.0's ability to emulate apple hardware enough to run Mac OS X -- a world first.

a commercial emulator called CherryOS which has been announced to support OS X at 80% of native hardware speeds, but with much scepticizm as noone had seen this emulator actually running and their proof *seems* to be, dare i say doctored PearPC graphics (hell im a sceptic untill i can see it running myself)

and finally very interesting read of "A Month with a Mac: A Die-Hard PC User's Perspective" (link to article)

so now.. im after an affordable apple laptop.. hmm.. but what can i say.. here in australia they cost about 2.5X as much as an equivalent PC laptop.

Should i blow at least 4K of my hard earned moneys??

The Yak Speakeasy, Saturday 16th October, 10:30pm
The House of Fools, Friday 22nd October, 11:00pm.
The Esplanade (November and December)

Wooo.. check out site, link to the right.

bit of an update..

its been all quiet on the western front here, as i still recover from a rather massive weekend that is. ugh.. why does my head still hurt.. and its tuesday..

lately at work i have had the pleaseure of having a play with mambo, which is a content management system that has won quite a few awards, not to mention the "Linux User and Developer Expo 2004 best Linux or Opensource software award".

It comes in both opensource and commercial licencing (commercial licencing includes support), but i for those that dont want the commercial version, i have found the mambo community vey strong and supportive.

I do have one criticism of mambo opensource though, and that is mamboforge which is a great idea (it contains all the plugins - modules and components in mambo terminology) but each module or component has the *most undescriptive* description i have ever seen (if it even exists). The lack of documentation is also appalling (but at least i can see that there are people trying to rectify this). This, in the end means you spend hours testing and randomly trying out new modules and components in a hope that you find what you are looking for, but in the end with perserverance, you will find it.

*pat pat* good brain..

alright.. i finally remembered why i started writing my previous post.. Ars Technica (one of my fav sites of all time) has just had a redesign, and wow.. its clean and readable! nice work guys

Rich Maha!

I did some work down near Glenferrie Rd this week, so I ended up going to lunch at some of the fine establishments there. On Wednesday, I saw the Rich Maha sign and thought, "OMGOMGOMGOMGLOLOLZZ!"
So, I went in and they had the usual Rich Maha menu (pretty much the same as the one on Burwood Hwy) except they've got roti rolls with 3 different fillings! They had beef, fish and vegetable. All I can say is that they were fuckin awesome.
Roti rolls rock.

windows xp sp2 mp3 codec missing problem + solution!

finally.. after quite a bit of digging i have found the solution

after upgrading to service pack 2, i coulnt play mp3 files in windows media player. i thought WMP 10 would solve this, but no.

microsoft have a knowledgebase article on this problem and a download to the solution (858KB file)

this can be applied to media player 9 only.
once applied you can upgrade to WMP 10

the empire demands you play games!

NationStates is a very entertaining game.
Its a political simulator where as leader of your own country you make decisions that effect your populace. only takes about 5 mins each day to play (you only get to make at most a few choices) and you see how your nation evolves ;)

Windows XP Service Pack 2 madness

win xp sp2 finally has been released. not without its own teething problems.

WARNING: the cautious should probably wait a week or two as there seem to be quite a few problems being discovered.

i advise you read the list of "products that may behave differently". Strangely microsoft's own windows media player no longer seems to play MP3 files and isnt (currently) listed (use winamp instead it's better anyway). the list seems to be growing as yesterday there were roughly 30 listed applications and games, and today there are 200.

So...

I LIKE CHOCOLATE!

The Da Vinci Code

The Da Vinci Code
by Dan Brown

One of the most eye opening, entertaining and thrilling books I have read in quite a while. Although I still haven't finished reading it, I can't hold in the profoundness of reading it without having to share. Believe me when I say you wont be disappointed, especially by the fact that this book's descriptions of the societies and organizations involved are accurate makes it that much more fascinating, and also partly because this book was almost banned from publication because its ideas are considered 'controversial'. Some say that it was a little less controversial, but a little too close to the truth.

The book itself is a fictional story, but everything referenced in it (and yes I have been checking too) is fact. While reading, I have been examining pieces of information, and been amazed at what has been right in front of my eyes and I simply have never seen. Read it with an open mind, and if you don't believe what you are reading, do the research and be awoken.

the end of sega in your homes?

well, its finally official, Sammy will purchase the remainder of SEGA that they dont already own. Although this means that the great SEGA name will live on for years to come, Sammy president (err i forget his name) has his own ideas as to what will happen to SEGA. Apparently all thats left is arcade machines and games for sega and no more consoles.

im saddened a bit as i was one of the few still hoping for a great SEGA comeback to the console market...

New Religion Creation

New Religion Creation - 'Old Testament'

In the beginning God created the bunny and the grape. The grape was without chickens and insane. Then God said let there be telephone and there was telephone. And God saw the telephone, that it was large. On the 6th day God created the first man, mooble poo. And God saw mooble poo, that he was stupid. God then took one of mooble poo's spleens and made the first woman, kharn. And God said you shall not eat of the ant of laptop for if you do you shall surely shout. But unfortunately a wily tree tricked kharn into eating of the ant of laptop while God wasn't looking. He eventually found out and kicked them out of the garden. mooble poo and kharn then had two sons, Cane and Able. Cane was a shooter of eskimoes, while Able was a herder of oranges. Cane then gave God an offering of bizzare marshmellows and Able gave Him an offering of cupcakes. But God really preferred the cupcakes so Cane silently ate Able in the fields. For that God cursed Cane to shoot eskimoes forever.

chickachow

porn rocks

the (un)wonderful world of web browsers

aah, rant time.

The internet is a great place to drive around, then theres your car, the humble web browser. There are only really 4 browsers which are worth any salt at all (especially since im stuck on windows).. first theres Internet Explorer (IE), Mozilla (MOZ), Firefox (FF) and Opera (Op).

lemmmie skip the spiel and go straight to the conclusion
Firefox > Opera > Mozilla >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> IE

but what do i use? hell.. IE of course! why? well.. because of certain things like web pages only being IE compliant and not following web standards, means everything looks ****ed if your NOT using IE.

but alas all is not lost, there are ingenious programs like MYIE2.

It adds funtionality to IE. Features that you can expect as standard in other browsers (tabbed browsing, popup blocking, mouse gestures, etc etc) if your using IE get it.. GET IT NOW.. while it wont make IE follow web standards, you are guarenteed that web pages will display as Internet Explorer intended (as most people online are using this browser)

after using firefox for the last 3 months and opera for a lil bit, I can only say that MYIE2 has saved my mind.. ive customised it to make it look exactly like firefox. but in the back of my mind, it burns, as i know im really using IE.. *hurls self at sharp inanimate object*

Review of Happy Tree Friends "Double Dose" DVD Set

Happy Tree friends is an insanely funny web flash cartoon series. Now in DVD.. well.. That's another story.. Now on with the review..

Happy Tree Friends Volume #1 - First Blood

packaging
nice artwork and great quality printing

feature film
14 episodes.. 12 of which I had already seen online in the last 2 months, each one after the other, but with the great (yet very annoying after the third episode) intro and credits with music. The intro takes 30 seconds on its own, then the episodes are about 30-40 seconds each, followed by 15 seconds of credits. I found it very disappointing that the intro was not modified for the DVD and only shown once for the entire disc, same goes for credits. The episodes themselves were encoded in stereo with a good quality picture (you cant beat a computer monitor) but things just weren't as funny the 4th time round (I visit their website frequently) so avid fans just wouldn't enjoy it as much. Because of the repeated intro/credits it became almost annoying watching all the episodes in a row.

extras
one maybe two funny ones, the rest were only mildly amusing

overall
only for collectors or those that haven't visited the website much. A fan would have seen all these episodes already. Watching all the episodes in a row it just became a little too much, they really needed to mix it up a little with some side skits or something similar. Not really much of a feature but more of a side show gag in itself. Pretty much the internet experience on a DVD, it just doesn't quite work right.

Happy Tree Friends - Second Serving

packaging

nice artwork and great quality printing as the first.

feature film
17 episodes.. 1/3 of which I had already seen online. Once again, each one after the other, but this time without any intro or credits. I found this curious as the intro is great and it would have been good in some form, but their decision made watching the episodes much easier to handle all in a row. The episodes were encoded in Dolby Digital 5.1 with a good quality picture. The sound was great and they put a lot of effort into it as can be found in the commentary. Still watching all the episodes in a row became boring as it was just too much of the same. Probably best enjoyed in 3-4 episode blocks, have a break and come back to it.

extras
The extras were quite entertaining for the short attention span audience that we are.

overall
A lot more effort went into this DVD than the first and it shows. They obviously learned that keeping the intro and credits in every episode became annoying and removed them, but once again it would of been good to see a special DVD only, longer intro and credits. A fan would have seen most of these episodes already, I hadn't as I only recently started following the series. Even though they learnt from some of the mistakes of the first DVD, this one still has its shortcomings, most notably that it becomes boring after a period of time and the transitions between the episodes are abrupt because of the chopped intro. Because of the shortcomings it lacked a professional feel to the finished visual product, audio on the other hand was outstanding.

Summary
Rating: 6/10 - nice, but doesn't quite cut the cheese.

This may seem like a harsh review, but the online version of the series is done so well that you are left thinking why the DVD is not up to scratch. I still love the series, and undoubtedly will watch it for many episodes more. Its a great break of random violence in my not so violent day.

stupid fuzzy hu-mons

ah.. time for me to rant about a particular incident that happened on ze weekend on my merry way to watch kill bill v2 @ the movies on sat night.

drivin along, like a happy chappy and i come to a T intersection with lights that were red, so well, having a higher IQ than a marshmellow, i stopped. Whilst contemplating the number of flesh eating undead zombie bunnies i would need to take over the world, the light turned green, BUT alas! coming through the newly formed red light of the intersection was an ambulance in flashy-light-make-noise mode.
so hey, i figured i shall remain stationary and let these hu-mons pass so i can destroy them another day. Then, simply expecting the events to unfold.. BEHOLD some careless wench decided to slam into my ass. (the cars rear end u perverted vermin O_o) twas only a low speed smack.. but enough to cause some bendy damage to the car..

well that pissed me off.. anyway, got out of the car and asked the *(&% cow woman if she saw the ambulance. "yes of course, but the light was green!" she goes, well i say "its an ambulance your SUPPOSED to let it through", "but the light was GREEN" she says again, "i was letting the ambulance though, someone could die" i say.. well that shut her up for like 2 seconds.. ranting on about how i caused this accident by being stationary and letting an ambulance through the intersection when i should of just zoomed on.. ugh.. still makes me angry...

Kill Bill vol. 2

Plot: Some chick flips out and kills people. Like a ninja.

Review: This was a highly disturbing movie where lots of people die and there are swords and guns and other people-killing devices. The most disturbing part was when the old kung-fu master guy stroked his beard. And stroked his beard. And stroked his beard. I thought his beard was going to ejaculate.

So, how many ticket stubs would I give to watch this movie in a cinema again?
4 and a half - but they would be the broken shards of a Hattori Hanzo katana.

Tech: Software Engineering for Internet Applications

whilst browsing PHPeverywhere one of my fav sites btw (i'm a PHP junkie). i stumbled over a great article. It linked to an interesting free online eBook by Philip Greenspun titled "Software Engineering for Internet Applications". If you code in PHP, Java Servletts, ASP or other such languages it is definetly worth a read.

umm just a quick wierd link.. its a live feed of.. erm.. pigs actually..

things that dogs know

maybe these cartoons will cheer me up. 2 episodes from the story of a dog named "princess"

"A while back Shockwave asked Matt and Trey to make a couple of short animated flash films for them. Although the two had warned Shockwave that they would deliver a cartoon with no holds barred, Shockwave insisted on having them make it. So, they did! And Princess was the result. See why Shockwave never aired them...."

the Matt and Trey reffered to above are the creators of the series South Park, which im sure u know of.

*WARNING NOT SAFE FOR WORK*
Episode 1 - Princess Hears A Strange Noise
Episode 2 - Princess Meets Officer Friendly

added search

hmm ive added a search function to the page, thanks to google, no thanks to blogspot, erm except that google own blogger.com now.. err..

basically you will be able to search for stuff in the archives in a few days (hopefully) once the google bots rummage through the site.

in the meantime, here are my complaints about blogger so far:
there is no search - as a search function is one of the most basic things there are i find this stupid
there are no categories - umm.. would be nice.. honestly

everything else is fine.. seeing as its free ;)

back from the doc

not that anyone cares, but i couldnt be bothered explaining the same story to every humon that i keep contact with. yes im that lazy.

got back from the docs re: my ac joint and he says everything is on track.. just one more week of this stupid sling and i am free! free i tell ye! Also i start physio tomorrow, which im sure will be fun & painful. but at least im on the road to recovery. ye-haw, time to do it again! I just hope i can drive my car soon, at least then i dont need to rely on public transport (grr) or damn autos.

BWAHAHAHA

it has come to my attention that Mr Robert is employee of the month. by zeus! it only seems fair that we "take the piss" (a great aussie term)

These individual quotes were reportedly taken from actual employee performance evaluations in a large US Corporation Rob's performance report

(1) "Since my last report, this employee has reached rock bottom.....and has started to dig."
(2) "His men would follow him anywhere, ....... but only out of morbid curiosity.'
(3) "I would not allow this employee to breed."
(4) "This employee is really not so much of a 'has-been', but more of a definite 'won't be'."
(5) "Works well when under constant supervision and cornered like a rat in a trap."
(6) "When she opens her mouth, it seems that it is only to change feet."
(7) "He would be out of his depth in a parking lot puddle."
(8) "This young lady has delusions of adequacy."
(9) "He sets low personal standards and then consistently fails to achieve them."
(10) "This employee is depriving a village somewhere of an idiot."
(11) "This employee should go far, ..... and the sooner he starts, the better."
(12) "Got a full 6-pack, but lacks the plastic thing to hold it all together."
(13) "A gross ignoramus—144 times worse than an ordinary ignoramus."
(14) "He certainly takes a long time to make his pointless."
(15) "He doesn't have ulcers, but he's a carrier."
(16) "I would like to go hunting with him sometime."
(17) "He's been working with glue too much."
(18) "He would argue with a signpost."
(19) "He has a knack for making strangers immediately detest him."
(20) "He brings a lot of joy whenever he leaves the room."
(21) "When his IQ reaches 50, he should sell."
(22) "If you see two people talking and one looks bored, ..... he's the other one."
(23) "A photographic memory but with the lens cover glued on."
(24) "A prime candidate for natural deselection."
(25) "Donated his brain to science before he was done using it."
(26) "Gates are down, the lights are flashing, but the train isn't coming."
(27) "Has two brains: one is lost and the other is out looking for it."
(28) "If he were any more stupid, he'd have to be watered twice a week."
(29) "If you give him a penny for his thoughts, you'd get change."
(30) "If you stand close enough to him, you can hear the oceans."
(31) "It's hard to believe that he beat 1,000,000 other sperm to the egg."
(32) "One neuron short of a synapse."
(33) "Some drink from the fountain of knowledge;..... he only gargled."
(34) "Takes him 2 hours to watch 60 minutes."
(35) "The wheel is turning, but the hamster is dead."

and last but not least.. a picture dear readers of robs happy face
